Survivor Week 1: the full breakdown, and why the biggest favorite is not the right pick

Survivor is not a game about picking winners. It is a game about spending winners. You get one use of every team all season, and Week 1 is when most pools throw away their best asset for a marginal edge. Here is the board, top to bottom.

THE BOARD. Chargers -9.5 vs. Cardinals. Jaguars -8.5 vs. Browns. Lions -7 vs. Saints. Steelers -6 vs. Falcons. Eagles -6 vs. Commanders. Ravens -3.5 at Colts. Bengals -3.5 vs. Buccaneers. Raiders -3 vs. Dolphins. Cowboys -3 at Giants. Bears -3 at Panthers. Chiefs -2.5 vs. Broncos. Titans, Bills and Vikings all -1.5.

THE PICK: JAGUARS (-8.5 vs. Browns). THE FACT: Jacksonville is the second-largest favorite on the board against a Cleveland team missing guard Teven Jenkins and playing a center who is questionable with a thumb injury. The total is 39.5, the third-lowest of the week, which is exactly what you want - low-scoring games favor the better team holding a lead. THE VERDICT: this is the pick. You get roughly the same win probability as the Chargers while saving a far more valuable team for later in the season.

THE SAVE: CHARGERS (-9.5 vs. Cardinals). THE FACT: Biggest number on the board, at home, against an Arizona team down three defensive starters with a questionable rookie running back. THE VERDICT: save them. Yes, it is the safest single game of the week. It is also the most popular pick in the country, which means winning with it gains you nothing while losing with it ends your season alongside a third of the pool. Los Angeles will be a 7-plus-point favorite several more times this year. Jacksonville probably will not.

THE SECOND SAVE: LIONS (-7 vs. Saints). THE FACT: New Orleans is without Cameron Jordan and has Alvin Kamara limited all week with a knee injury. Detroit at home off that is a legitimately strong spot. THE VERDICT: save, narrowly. The Lions are a top-tier survivor asset you will want in a tougher week, and a seven-point spread is not enough edge over the 8.5 you can get elsewhere to justify spending them now.

THE CONTRARIAN: STEELERS (-6 vs. Falcons). THE FACT: Atlanta has been ruled out at quarterback - Tua Tagovailoa with an oblique, Michael Penix Jr. not starting off a knee issue - and Pittsburgh is a six-point home favorite in a 41.5-total game. THE VERDICT: large pools only. A team starting its third quarterback option on the road is a better fade than a six-point line suggests, and public ownership here will be low because the number is not eye-catching. If your pool has hundreds of entries, this is where you separate.

THE AVOIDS. Eagles -6 vs. Commanders: a divisional game in Week 1 is variance you do not need. Bengals -3.5, Raiders -3, Cowboys -3, Bears -3: field-goal favorites are coin flips wearing a favorite's jersey, and none of them are worth a life. Titans, Bills and Vikings at -1.5: these are not survivor games, they are entertainment.

THE PROCESS: the correct Week 1 pick is the highest win probability available among teams you will not miss later. That is almost never the largest favorite, because the largest favorite is usually also your best future asset. Jacksonville threads it - big enough number to be safe, replaceable enough that you will not want them back in November.
